Bernina Gran Turismo is a hillclimb event organised by a group of enthusiasts to celebrate the races held in the St.Moritz area in the 1920s and ’30s. The event is a blend of history, sport, competition and authentic rough luxury, the goal being to offer a unique experience.
The event is a hillclimb race on a closed road for sports and racing cars built up to the early 1980s along the Bernina pass, from La Rösa up to the Bernina Hospiz: 5,6 kilometres of pure adrenalin in an inimitable Alpine setting. It is a unique opportunity to have a mountain pass all to yourself to let your classic car do all it can do!
The mid September date has been chosen to take advantage of the beautiful colours of the end-of-summer and of the great driving roads, free from the high summer traffic, to encourage the participants and the enthusiasts to come to the Engadine with their classic car and enjoy a beautiful tour. The best from the St. Moritz hospitality, together with an insider experience of the Engadine tradition, will make sure this will be a complete event for racers as well as guests, and for car owners and public alike.
On offer in support of the Zip Zap Circus charity is an entry to compete in the 2020 Bernina Hillclimb and drive an ex Carrera Panamericana Jaguar XK120 race car (previously owned by Nick Mason of Pink Floyd). The 2020 event takes place between the 17th and 20th of September. If travel arrangements cannot be secured for 2020 this lot can be transferred to the 2021 event.
The Zip Zap circus is a social circus in Cape Town that uses circus arts as a tool for youth development and social transformation.
Zip Zap’s mission is to provide ordinary children and youth at risk with the resources to develop both performance and life skills that enable them to develop as young leaders, good citizens, ambassadors for South Africa and to make them eminently employable. Zip Zap funds these programmes through a combination of public performances and grants and donations from individuals, foundations and corporates.
The winning bidder does not need to have a racing license. A temporary license will be issued through the Swiss authorities. Accomodation at Lej da Staz (St Moritz) is included for three nights for the winning bidder and spectating partner and the Jaguar XK120 will be prepared by classic motorsport specialists Cameron Engineering. Only flights need to be booked and paid by the bidder.
This is a once in a lifetime unique experience in support of a very worthy cause that is not to be missed
