The Porsche 356 B T6 Convertible is a development of Porsche’s first production car (the 356) and is the predecessor to the iconic Porsche 911. The Porsche 356 was a lightweight rear engine two door sportscar which was powered by a flat four engine
Early in the 1960’s, Lindsay Saker, the South African Porsche importer, proposed the idea to assemble semi knocked down units of the Porsche 356 to avoid prohibitive import duties. 57 Semi knocked down units – primed body shells were shipped to South Africa. However, on the way to South Africa, seven cars fell into the Suez Canal. The remaining 50 units made their way to SA and were assembled by Lindsay Saker
These 50 cars are the only Porsches ever to be assembled by an importer outside of Germany and featured local content such as the batteries, tyres, windscreen, and upholstery
This Porsche 356 BT6 Convertible is number 39 of the 50 cars assembled locally and is powered by the standard 60 BHP engine.
According to the Porsche birth certificate this example was delivered new to Mr Le Roux of Edenvale who owned the car for 15 years. Only four more owners are recorded over the next 40 plus years. The Porsche birth certificate also confirms that the chassis and engine numbers on the car and registration papers today correspond with those when the car was delivered new (numbers matching)
Few cars have a documented maintenance history as extensive as this example with a file accompanying this Porsche 356 detailing routine maintenance and restoration from all the owners over the years. This impressive maintenance history represents itself in the impressive ride and handling of this example. Although a restoration was completed more than ten years ago, this example is of a high quality both cosmetically and mechanically.
This is a rare opportunity to secure a Porsche 356 with a unique South African relevance.
