In the early 1960’s, BMW’s Neue Klasse was introduced. This was the beginning of a new era and the foundation for the BMW we know today. The Neue Klasse helped BMW define a clear market position as a manufacturer of both sporty and everyday vehicles. The Neue Klasse Coupe, the BMW 2000 CS, introduced in 1965, was designed by Wilhelm Hofmeister together with Giovanni Michelotti and is widely regarded as the car that defined the company’s design direction. The elegant pillarless bodies were built by Karmann and were powered by BMW's 125 hp 2.0L M10 inline 4 engine, fitted with two Solex side draft carburetors.
Although over 11 000 examples were produced, the right-hand drive examples are extremely rare with only 148 right hand drive cars converted in the UK for their market ........ and apparently less than 20 factory right hand drive examples were built. The BMW 2000 CS is a highly collectible and significant model in BMW’s history.
According to the accompanying BMW Heritage certificate and original service booklet, this BMW 2000 CS was manufactured on the 18th April 1969 and delivered on the 10th of June 1969 by Stikland Motors (Pty) Ltd via the importer Euro-Republic Automobile distributors (Pty) Ltd, as Club Motors was first known. Mr SL Harris was the first owner based in Bergvliet Cape Town and extremely passionate about BMW. He ensured this Polaris Silver BMW 2000 CS was fully serviced and extremely well looked after.
Apparently, this vehicle is one of less than 20 factory built Right Hand Drive BMW 2000CS ever made in contrast to the 148 UK market Right hand drive examples converted on arrival in the UK.
On arrival at Crossley & Webb, this example has had a major service and detailing completed which has included the following:
This is a rare opportunity to secure an excellent unrestored example of BMW’s first Neue Klasse coupe. An historically important classic BMW, especially now that BMW is reinventing itself with the 2nd Neue Klasse series.
