The Porsche 911 SC was introduced in 1978 and was built to appeal to a wider sportscar market. It was available in Coupe, Targa, and later Cabriolet versions and was powered by the 3.0l flat six engine. The crankcase and gearbox housing were made of aluminium rather than magnesium. Magnesium cases were replaced due to being less durable and expensive to produce. The 911 SC is a landmark Porsche which is credited with saving the 911 model. Porsche had developed the V8 powered 928 to replace it, but sales were very strong for the 911 SC, and Porsche was convinced to keep the 911 in production.

A big factor contributing to the strong sales for the Porsche 911 SC was the enhanced ease of use. This was due to the following:

• A different camshaft design which gave the engine a more tractable low-end.
  • The Porsche 911 SC was easier to drive around town and in traffic.
  • Fewer downshifts to extract performance.
• The 3.0L flat 6-cylinder engine with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection was based on a non turbo version of the 930 Turbo engine. This aluminium 3.0l engine offered better reliability and more potential for future tuning than the Magnesium 2.7l.
• Servo assisted brakes which provided improved braking performance and better pedal feel.

According to the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and original service booklets, this Porsche 911 SC was produced on the 7th April 1980 and delivered a month later on the 28th of May 1980 by UK Porsche dealer JCT 600 Brooklands. This example still has its original engine and is presented in original Talbot yellow with Brown Vinyl with Pascha Black/Beige inserts. This Porsche 911 SC Targa’s service booklets show an extensive maintenance record, a large history file with invoices covering several decades is present and earlier in 2024 a major service and clutch replacement were completed by a Porsche specialist workshop in Cape Town.
