This was derived from the 908-race car to handle the increased power and torque. Due to oversteer with the rear mounted engine, the 1972 model year also had the oil tank moved in front of the right rear wheel as opposed to the traditional layout behind the right rear wheel. This was done to improve balance and weight distribution but only lasted for the 1972 model year due to changes in safety regulations and was replaced to its original setting.
