The 928 was a bold attempt to create a successor to the iconic, rear-engined 911 and was the first production Porsche to feature a front-mounted, water-cooled V8 engine. Early production centred on the base 928, built from 1978 to 1982 with a 4.5-litre V8 delivering smooth, effortless performance. In 1980 Porsche elevated the formula with the introduction of the 928 S. The S featured a 4.7-litre all-aluminium V8 producing approximately 300 horsepower in Euro spec and a rear-mounted transaxle gearbox that helped achieve a near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution. This innovative layout endowed the 928 S with balance and stability that made it one of the finest high-speed touring cars of its time.
The Porsche 928 S wasn't just a more powerful version of the 928; it was a more refined, technologically advanced, and performance-oriented evolution of a car that was already a clean-sheet design. It took the 928's core innovations and pushed them to a new level, solidifying its place as a true high-performance luxury GT.
