While the Shelby Cobras were dominating the tight road courses, they lacked the aerodynamics for the high-speed European circuits such as Le Mans. The solution was a coupe version developed in 1964. This aerodynamic coupe, built to take on Ferrari’s 250 GTO, was known as the Daytona Coupe following the car’s first major victory at the Daytona International Speedway in February 1964.
The Shelby Daytona Coupe went on to win the GT class at the 1964 Lemans 24 hours with Dan Gurney and Bob Bondurant, beating the Ferrari 250 GTO and was the first and only American made car to win the World Manufacturer’s Championship for GT cars, the International GT manufacturers title in 1965. Only six examples were built between 1964 and 1965
