The Mercedes Benz 190SL (W121) is a rare open top sportscar produced between 1955 and 1963. This was an important time for the motor industry as the motor car represented the newfound freedom of the 1950’s. Never previously did so many realize the dream of having their own car.
Max Hoffman, the US importer for Mercedes Benz, proposed the development of two new models to fulfill the need of the American market for sportscars. The first, a real performance sports car which became the 300SL Gullwing and the second, a more affordable open top two-seater car in the style of the 300sl, which became the 190SL.
The concept was shown at New York Auto show in February 1954 with the final version shown at Geneva in 1955 as the SL. The “S” stood for Sports and the “L” for Light with the emphasis on “Comfortable Sporty Elegance”. The monocoque chassis was based on a shortened 180 saloon with the powerplant comprising of a 105 HP, 1.9 litre four cylinder with overhead camshaft and twin Solex carburetors
This is an opportunity to secure a restored Mercedes Benz 190sl which evokes the romance and freedom of 1950’s motoring and features the iconic styling cues of the 300sl.
