Introduced at the Frankfurt Motor show in 1965, the W108 series set a new standard for mass produced luxury saloons. Designed by Paul Bracq, who is also known for designing the Mercedes Benz W113 Pagoda. He took inspiration from the W111 luxury convertibles and coupes which are often mistaken as part of the W108 series.
In 1967 to 1972 the second series of W108’s was introduced with in line 6-cylinder overhead cam engines now upgraded to 2.8 litres (M130 engine series) with the 280s fueled by two twin barrel downdraft Zenith carburetors and the 280se featuring mechanical Bosch injection. The W108 series was an amazing success known for reliability and durability and are sought after collector cars today
This Mercedes Benz 280se Automatic was built in East London by Car Distributors and is finished in White with the local “Silveroak” upholstery leather (unique to South African specification cars). It was delivered new by M&Z Motors & Engineering Windhoek on the 19th of May 1971.
It was serviced by M&Z Motors & Engineering until May 1985 (32804km) with a service recorded at Eikestad Motors Stellenbosch in 1991 (51023km). The second owner who we purchased the car from mentioned that he had bought the Mercedes Benz approximately 7 years ago from the daughter of the first owner who inherited the car. It stood for a long period of time well preserved and was recommissioned for use once again with special attention to retain the car’s authenticity.
This is one of the finest examples of a Mercedes Benz W108 series that we have come across with its full book set, service manual, and even the business card of the salesperson who delivered the car still present. Based on the service history, the 65 100km are presumed to be original.
This Mercedes Benz exudes timeless style and is a user-friendly classic that can be enjoyed regularly. This represents a rare opportunity to secure one of the best examples of the W108 series and is the first such example of this quality we have come across in eight years of business.
