The Mercedes Benz SL, or Sport Light, was first launched in 1954 and caused a sensation with its Gullwing doors and motorsport derived technology. The third generation SL, the R 107, made its debut in 1971 with the 350SL model. The R107 series succeeded the much-loved W113 series 'Pagoda', which had set a high standard for luxury sports cars.
The 500sl was manufactured between 1980 and 1989. It’s all aluminium 5.0 V8 produced 237 BHP with 402 nm torque which powered the 500sl to a top speed of 225 km/h. The 500SL's chassis was well engineered and designed to offer maximum rigidity while maintaining a relatively low weight. The Mercedes Benz 500sl was great sales success and it appeared regularly in numerous films and television series such as "Dallas" which helped to reinforce its image as a dream car
This Mercedes Benz 500sl was ordered in Signal red with Beige MB Tex interior. According to the original service booklet, it was delivered on the 5th of September 1984 to the Australian Embassy in Pretoria and driven on diplomatic plates.
