The production of the Mercedes Benz R107 SL (Sport Light) “R” in R107 standing for Roadster, began in April 1971 and continued for 18 years becoming a status symbol of the time. Designed by the original 300SL designer, Friedrich Geiger, the R107 was the replacement for the successful W113 “Pagoda” with its focus on quality and new safety features such as a strengthened A pillar, crumple zones in chassis, the use of foam padding in the dashboard, headrests as standard and seatbelts. The R 107 was available with a soft-top and optional hard top along with optional foldable rear seats to provide flexibility.
The Mercedes Benz 500sl model was introduced in 1980 and featured a 5.0l V8 engine which produced 241 BHP. In 1981 the V8 engines were redesigned to reduce consumption and emissions in line with Mercedes Benz’s “Energy Concept”. The Mercedes Benz flagship model was known for its legendary quality and performance with 11 812 examples produced during its nine-year lifecycle.
This Mercedes Benz R107 series is a 500SL that was left the Sindelfingen factory on the 10th of December 1984 and was first registered in South Africa in 1985.
